WELCOME to the summer edition of our NGO newsletter ‘Watch This! NGO\r\nvoices on the CDM’!\r\nThe heat is on as last projects from emerging economies rush to\r\nregistration before the change of eligibility for the European market\r\nat the end of the year will take effect. Dirty coal will not make the\r\nrace as the methodology remains suspended. This decision kicks\r\nalmost all future carbon credits from coal power projects out of the\r\nEU ETS. Good timing! While this is amazing news, much work still\r\nneeds to be done to create finance mechanisms with net benefits\r\nfor climate and people. Maybe the development of sustainable\r\ndevelopment goals launched this year at Rio+20 will be able to\r\nbreak the deadlock and contribute to prioritizing projects that truly\r\nbenefit local populations and the climate. Given the problems the\r\nCDM is plagued with, many issues need to be addressed in the\r\nreform efforts under way and expectations are high.\r\npage 5. Happy 1st Birthday CDM Watch\r\nNetwork!
